(RE)DISCOVERING SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP –
HUMAN-SIZED, WOUNDED,
INCREDIBLY ALIVE

WHO YOU ARE (BECOMING)
MATTERS MORE THAN WHAT YOU DO.

This feels obvious, in a way. Who you are off stage is, in the long run, way more impactful than what you say on stage. How you instinctively respond to conflict, criticism, or praise will speak way louder than anything you do. What is going on in our souls overshadows everything else we are trying to accomplish!

This is by design, I think. The call to Spiritual Leadership is not to preach great sermons and organize help for the poor (though both are important!), but to lead out of the transformation of your soul in the presence of God. It is the journey God has taken with every one of his leaders. We are called to lead out of who we are becoming.

And yet, this is rarely how we approach life and ministry. Our focus usually is not on who we are becoming, but on what we are doing. It’s easier to measure, it feels good to get things accomplished – and what would even be the alternative? Trying to have more quiet times? Reading books on Spiritual Formation? How do you attend to the transformation of your soul in the presence of God?

In my experience, there really is a life in which God’s presence is mysteriously but profoundly real to me at every moment. God’s love is so tangible, my soul can actually feed on it. I can sense what God might be up to, let go of my agenda and join Him in His. It is very much an ongoing journey for me, but I’ve tasted some of this life, and I long for more.

But (re)entering this life takes time and focus; it takes allowing God to pour into us (rather than into our church); it takes an unflinching look at our own heart. It also takes external voices, some guides that are further down the path, and space to process it all. This is, in a nutshell, what the Quiet Heart Journey hopes to provide.
